What Could Be Causing Your Senior Parent’s Sleep Problems? Here are Some Causes to Consider.

January 2, 2015 by Edward Harrison

Home Care near Anderson, SC – Is your Senior Not Sleeping Well?

It’s no secret that getting a good night’s sleep is important to an individual’s overall emotional and physical health. This is even more important when it comes to seniors, as decent sleep has many benefits such as:

  • Improving their memory formation
  • Improving their concentration
  • Strengthening their immune system

Sleep patterns can change and improve or worsen over time; it’s important to regularly ask seniors in your care about the quality of their sleep and if they have trouble doing so. Hiring a home care professional during the day is a good way to ensure your senior is prepared for a good night’s sleep. In the following article, you will find some of the common causes and cures for insomnia and sleep-related problems.

It Is Often a Side Effect of Mental Health Issues

Often sleep problems are a side effect of a serious mental issue, such as an anxiety disorder or depression. If a senior that you are caring for starts to suffer from sleeping problems after going through a stressful situation or after they have suffered a difficult loss, it is important that they visit their doctor or a mental health care professional as soon as possible.

Discomfort or Pain May Be the Cause

Arthritis-related pain and soreness is one of the most common causes of insomnia among seniors. If a senior in your care has developed a chronic condition, you should ask their health care professional or doctor for advice on how they can manage the pain, particularly during the night.

Excessive Napping

It is not uncommon for seniors to nap more at daytime than younger people, which can obviously lead to problems when they try to settle own for a deep sleep at night. If a senior you are caring for is suffering from sleep issues, you could suggest they try either limiting their naps to 30 minutes or cutting them out completely.

It Could Be Side Effects of Their Medication

When seniors start taking new medication it can alter their sleep patterns. You need to check with their doctor if there are any side effects when they start new doses or types of medication or if there are any changes to their sleeping habits.

Alcohol and Caffeine Could Be Responsible

Consuming drinks that affect blood sugar levels can prevent us from getting to sleep and staying asleep. Therefore, if a senior in your care likes to have a caffeinated or alcoholic drink before they go to bed and is experiencing sleep issues, it may be time to encourage them to drink something else and avoid those types of drinks after 4 pm.

Edward Harrison founded the Heart of the Carolinas Homecare in 2007 when he saw there was a need for caregivers that provide non-medical home care services, at a price that most people could afford. It was standard in the industry to require hourly minimums and it was common to be assigned a caregiver, not matched with one based on your individual personal needs. Edward understood that to make a successful relationship between caregiver and client, skills were not enough, personality and compatibility plays as much a role as do skills.
