Holiday Coping Tips For Seniors That Are Alone

November 22, 2022 by Edward Harrison

The holidays can be a difficult time for seniors, especially for seniors that have recently lost a spouse or a loved one. If seniors are alone for the holidays because their partner is gone and their kids or loved ones live too far away to visit it’s easy for them to fall into a depression that can become serious. Seniors who are struggling with their mental healthy can withdraw from life and become hermits shutting out the world. But there are better ways seniors can cope with being alone during the holidays like:

Companion Care At Home

Companion care at home gives seniors the vital human connection they need, especially during the holidays. They don’t have to go out and try to find new activities or friends because they will have a friend coming to the house daily. With a companion in their home seniors will have someone to talk with, laugh with, decorate the house with, and enjoy some holiday activities like shopping with. They will also have a friend to hang out with and watch TV with. Having companion care at home can be a fantastic way to keep seniors from getting lonely during the holidays.

Finding New Friends

Seniors can also connect with other lonely seniors during the holidays. There are lots of seniors who can’t be with family for one reason or another and are looking for friends to spend time with during the holidays. The local senior center is a great place for seniors to find other seniors that they can be friends with and spend time with during the holidays. Seniors who are away from their families can watch holiday movies, exchange gifts, have holiday parties, and enjoy the festivities of the season together.

Reconnecting With Neighbors

The holidays are a great time for seniors to reconnect with neighbors that they haven’t seen in a long time or introduce themselves to new neighbors. Holiday caroling can break the ice. Or, seniors can organize a little neighborhood hot chocolate and tea party so that all of the neighbors can hang out and get to know one another. There are a lot of great reasons for seniors to make the effort to get closer to their neighbors but one of them is socializing and building relationships with the people who are in close physical proximity.

Video Chatting With Family

Just because families can be together in person doesn’t mean they can’t be together. Family Zoom calls are a standard part of the holiday now and families can join together from all over the world to celebrate together. Seniors who don’t really consider themselves to be tech savvy can rely on a companion to help them use a smart phone or tablet to video chat with their kids, their siblings, or friends during the holidays. And with the magic of video chat seniors can show their kids some of those iconic family holiday recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation.

Edward Harrison founded the Heart of the Carolinas Homecare in 2007 when he saw there was a need for caregivers that provide non-medical home care services, at a price that most people could afford. It was standard in the industry to require hourly minimums and it was common to be assigned a caregiver, not matched with one based on your individual personal needs. Edward understood that to make a successful relationship between caregiver and client, skills were not enough, personality and compatibility plays as much a role as do skills.
