That Late Afternoon Cup of Coffee Could be Causing Your Sleepless Nights as a Caregiver

Caregiver in Anderson, SC

Having difficulty sleeping at night could be the result of numerous things going on in your life. If you are a caregiver taking care of an elderly parent or other family member, you are among more than 40 million people doing the same exact thing.

When you go home at night, you might be worried about your elderly loved one. You may be thinking all about these worst-case scenarios, including the possibility that he or she tried to get out of bed, slipped, fell, and can’t get up. You might be worried that your aging father could be suffering a heart attack and can’t reach the phone to call for help. These are common worries and concerns that people have about their loved ones, especially when they live alone or are not very close in proximity to them.

However, there could be some other reason why you’re not getting a good night sleep. If you find yourself crawling into bed late at night, only to find yourself staring at the ceiling unable to drift off to sleep, or you continually wake up throughout the night and have difficulty falling back to sleep, it might be something more than just your regular concerns and stressors in your life.

It could have to do with a late afternoon or evening cup of coffee that you drank.

Many people don’t fully understand the impact that caffeine can have on them. It takes approximately eight hours for caffeine to completely leave the system after it has been consumed. Caffeine is a stimulant, meaning that if you still have some in your system from that late afternoon or evening cup of coffee (even decaf has some amount of caffeine in it), it’s likely you will have a hard time falling asleep.  It could be causing your brain to be overstimulated and unable to quiet itself to allow you a comfortable night’s sleep.

March is National Caffeine Awareness Month.  If you’re having difficulty falling asleep, look at your caffeine consumption habits. If you’re not drinking anything caffeinated after 12 o’clock in the afternoon, and you’re still having difficulty sleeping, it may be time to sit down and talk to your family about hiring a professional caregiver.
