What Do You Need to Know as a New Family Caregiver?

January 7, 2021 by Edward Harrison

Whether your elderly family member needs a lot of help immediately or you’re still easing into being a family caregiver, there’s a lot to learn. Hopefully you’re in a situation that enables you to talk with your senior about what she wants and where she wants to be in a few years. These aren’t easy conversations, but they’re vital ones to have.

Your Senior’s Goals

Elder Care Anderson, SC: New Family Caregiver

Your senior might not have thought about her plans as actual goals, but that’s what they are. If she wants to remain in her home for as long as possible, that’s a solid goal. The trick is whether or not that’s an achievable goal and what sort of support she needs in order to meet that goal. Talk to your aging family member about what she wants out of this stage of her life.

What Care Your Senior Needs Now and Later

Your aging family member might not need a lot of hands-on care right now. What she needs now might be more along the lines of companionship and assistance with managing the logistical part of problem-solving. In the future, though, she may have some much more demanding needs. This is especially true if she’s already dealing with one or more chronic health issues.

What Types of Services Are Available

As you get to know more about what types of care your elderly family member is going to need, you also need to start looking into the types of services that are available to meet those needs. Elder care services may be something you turn to now for companionship for your senior, but down the road she may need more help with things like transportation and personal care tasks.

How to Take Care of Yourself

Being a family caregiver is a demanding task. It requires a lot from you, so you have to be able to find the support that you need, too. When you’re taking the best care possible of yourself, that frees you up to be able to give your senior what she needs. At the very least, you’re in a better position to be able to find the solutions that meet those needs for her.

There’s no one right path as a family caregiver. Give yourself some space to learn what you need to know and to handle issues as they come up. The more information that you have, the easier it is to make tough decisions.

Edward Harrison founded the Heart of the Carolinas Homecare in 2007 when he saw there was a need for caregivers that provide non-medical home care services, at a price that most people could afford. It was standard in the industry to require hourly minimums and it was common to be assigned a caregiver, not matched with one based on your individual personal needs. Edward understood that to make a successful relationship between caregiver and client, skills were not enough, personality and compatibility plays as much a role as do skills.
