Common Changes to Senior Citizen Health as They Age

December 15, 2021 by Edward Harrison

As your elderly loved one ages even more, there will be some changes that you might want to look into. These changes are quite common in the elderly. With that being said, there are also some things that can be done to help keep these things under control.

Hard-Working Heart

Your elderly loved one is getting older and so is their body. One of the parts of their body that will be likely working harder is their heart. There are numerous reasons for this including:

Elder Care Greer, SC: Seniors and Health Changes

  • Not moving around as much
  • Breathing issues
  • Health issues

The older your elderly loved one gets, the more these issues may put pressure on their heart. The good news is that you and elder care providers can help your elderly loved one to keep their heart healthier. If you encourage your elderly loved one to eat healthier, exercise, and manage heart health through their doctor, it could help their heart to stay stronger for longer.

Vision and Hearing Changes

Two other things that commonly change in senior citizens is their vision and hearing. There are numerous health conditions that can cause these things to change. However, just getting older can lead to some vision and hearing loss, as well. There are some products that can help the elderly to see and hear better including:

  • Glasses
  • Hearing aids
  • Amplifiers on smartphones

These are just some options if your elderly loved one is experiencing vision or hearing changes. If you have more concerns about their vision or hearing, be sure to have them see their doctors.

Losing Bone Density

Another common change that happens often for the elderly is losing bone density. Everyone will lose some bone density. The degree to which that happens varies from one person to the next. There are, however, some ways that you can help your elderly loved one to keep their bones strong such as:

  • Having yourself or an elder care provider exercise with them
  • Encouraging your elderly loved one to get up and moving at least every 2 hours (at most)
  • Having your elderly loved one lift small weights and do daily stretches
  • Encouraging your elderly loved one to go for a daily walk (even if that is just in their house)

If your elderly loved one does these things, it could help to keep their bones stronger for longer.

Conclusion

These are some of the common changes that happen with many senior citizens. If you are caring for your elderly loved one, it is a good idea to learn as much as you can about these changes. That way, if they happen with your elderly loved one, you are more prepared for what you can do about them.

Edward Harrison founded the Heart of the Carolinas Homecare in 2007 when he saw there was a need for caregivers that provide non-medical home care services, at a price that most people could afford. It was standard in the industry to require hourly minimums and it was common to be assigned a caregiver, not matched with one based on your individual personal needs. Edward understood that to make a successful relationship between caregiver and client, skills were not enough, personality and compatibility plays as much a role as do skills.
